OCR: Why do DCA flights fight as a four-ship, in a loose line, rather than fighting as singles? · Flights fight as a four-ship for mutual protection and concentrated fire power. Yes- Four aircraft working together are far more effective than singles or pairs. It is not necessary for all flight members to actually see each other at all times. They know where each other are at all times and this is achieved with experience that provides for 'situation awareness.' Electronic aids also assist. Remember also, missiles coming off four aircraft are more impressive than off singles or pairs.
